Presentation

The establishment Machado Joalheiro was founded in 1880 on Rua do Loureiro in Porto. In 1914, it moved to its current location on Rua 31 de Janeiro, maintaining the space exactly as it was at the time of its inauguration. The business has been managed by the same family for five generations, and its field of operation remains unchanged: goldsmithing, jewellery, and luxury watchmaking.

Unique features

The Porto de Tradição Machado Joalheiro shop was built in 1914 by architect Francisco de Oliveira Ferreira and his brother, sculptor José de Oliveira Ferreira. It is an example of the Art Nouveau artistic movement, standing out due to the features of its façade, ceilings, and interior furnishings. In addition to its material heritage, Machado Joalheiro has the privilege of maintaining a stock of antique jewellery, drawings that served as the basis for creating pieces, as well as goldsmithing tools and instruments.

A story or curiosity

Stories and curiosities abound in this unique space in the city of Porto. From its connection with Alves dos Reis, the infamous banknote forger, to the signatures in the guestbook of General Carmona and the Infanta of Spain, Isabel de Bourbon, during her visit to Porto in 1929, this place is filled with remarkable memories. A special highlight is the honour reception given to the "1 millionth tourist" who visited Porto and was received with great celebration at the shop.

Integration with the Local community

As a business that requires a certain level of exclusivity, its contribution to the local community is primarily through the sharing and exhibition of its heritage. To this end, a museum is currently being prepared that will allow visitors to discover the history and legacy not only of Machado Joalheiro but also of Portuguese jewellery.
